GEO-C POST DOC position in Lisbon

The NOVA Information Management School (NOVA IMS) at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal (http://novaims.unl.pt) is offering a full-time Post-Doctoral position at post-graduate level as Science and Technology Manager (BGCT), fixed term, to be filled from July 1st 2015 until October 31st 2018 (40 months).

The fellowship amount for the full time position (current working hours are 40 hours per week) is according to the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology. The full monthly maintenance stipend scale is available athttp://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.en. Successful candidates will be placed in the BGCT group (Doctor). The level of the stipend (€1495 – €1995) within this group will be determined based on prior experience.

Candidates are expected to hold a PhD degree in Geoinformatics, Computer Science, Information Management, Geographic Information Systems or a related discipline and should have a strong interest in smart cities and/or in research areas related to smart cities (e.g. geographic information systems, sensors, location-based services, mobile and ubiquitous computing, crowd sourcing, technology adoption by citizens). Excellent technical skills are a prerequisite for applying, and previous experience in programming is also essential. Prior experience in working in a large-scale international project, including managerial aspects, would be desirable. Similarly, past work with open source software and familiarity with the underlying licenses, methods and tools would be of high value for the advertised position.

The successful candidate will work in the context of an international PhD program (http://geo-c.eu) in the area of open cities. The main tasks will include:

  • The management of the technical aspects of developing a large open-source framework;
  • Supporting doctoral researchers in developing their own research agenda;
  • Facilitating the collaboration of doctoral researchers groups in Germany, Spain, and Portugal, and
  • Contributing to the overall management of the project.

Though there are no mandatory teaching duties attached to the position, opportunities for teaching on different levels (doctorial, postgraduate and undergraduate) exist should the successful candidate wish to participate in teaching. The appointment explicitly includes the opportunity to develop an independent research profile.
